Ohnoes - Am now tackling the wretch that is my UCAS personal statement. I have never been good at selling myself, so this whole thing is fairly painful for me; it's kinda like ANTM and they go "Why should you be America's next top model?", and the bimbo goes "Because I have, like, the confidence and the passion" and you cringe instinctively - it'll be 3412302183 more cringes before I finish this shit, I foresee.

This is where I decide I am f-ing sick and tired of staring at my history notes and decide, instead, to indulge in some band-whoring.

I think I've been extremely explicit with my complete awe/crazy love/slutdom for Tokyo Jihen/Shiina Ringo, so I will not talk about them in this entry. Will, instead, talk about other Japanese bands I have a great endearment towards, so if people singing about things you can't understand isn't your cup of thing, you might want to pass on this one. =)

YUKI

I will admit I was never a fan of the band she used to be in (Judy and Mary), but that hasn't stopped be from being in total love with pretty much about every single damn solo album she's released thus far (her 4th drops in September). She started off drying to do a bit of that grunge/garage rock thing in her first album, digressing liberally to trips of folk and electronic sounds. Her second album "Commune" sees that folk/country vibe explored in greater depth; but her real strength, really, I think, lies in beat-heavy pop music, which her third album "JOY" is chock-full of. Seriously, once you get past her nasal wail of a voice, you'll be wanting to get up to do that silly dance in the music video for "joy". Incidentally, her music videos are a delight to watch; music shouldn't be about the visuals but it really doesn't hurt that her videos are about as endearing as her music. GARNET CROW

What first drew me to this band was the irresistibly pretty melody of this "Kimi no uchi ni tsuku made zutto hashitte yuku" off their first album. That, and composer/vocalist Nakamura Yuri's deep, resonant voice; I don't believe I've heard anyone else sing quite like her. The uninitiated listener might find them bland, but I really enjoy the honest, vanilla quality in their music. Lyricist/keyboardist Azuki Nana also writes some of the loveliest lyrics, too. It also doesn't hurt that Yuri is extremely pleasing to the eyes. Oh my goodness, where should I start. Also known as Kawase Tomoko (aka the brilliant green's vocalist), Tommy february6's her 80s bubblegum pop persona. She's past 30 now, and still she looks like a geeky high school girl with her glasses and Sweet Valley High novels. And she takes the whole 80s parody act to the max, right down to the lip-synching during all her live performances (it has to be deliberate 'cos it's like she doesn't bother to try to hide that fact at all). Very happy stuff, and anybody who covers Kylie Minogue's "I should be so lucky" deserves props. Videos: Lonely in gorgeous, Kiss One More Time, je t'aime je t'aime

fra-foa is LOUD. It is my belief that lead vocalist/songwriter Mikami Chisako has more balls than many male rockers out there. I swear you can hear blood in her voice during their live performances. They've disbanded now, leaving behind two fucking awesome rock albums. Chisako's gone solo, too; I think she's doing some Bjork thing now, like most female rockers tend to do when they go solo. -muses. THE BACK HORN

Probably my favourite Japanese rock band with a male vocalist after SPITZ and Mr.Children, I -think-. Incredibly visceral sound; the vocalist, Yamada Masashi has a great voice that sounds great whether he is crooning or screaming his lungs out. Vids: Kiseki, REQUIEM, SUNNY (live; ignore the irrelevant fluff at the start of this, the actual performance is great)

Love Psychedelico

Funky duo; vocalist Kumi has an incredibly cool voice (you know, like, attitude), and I am quite a sucker for the guitar playing they start many of their songs with. I think the correct term is surfer rock; I distinctly get a surf vibe from many their songs though I suppose you could call them punk rock, too. What I absolutely love about them is how they sound so distinctly Japanese; I don't believe the songs would sound quite right in any other language. Anyway, 2 girls on bass and guitar respectively pussy-whipping their drummer? Hell yeah! Time is dribbling away like sand through the hourglass/The Days of Our Lives. It doesn't help that Mr.K likes to waste the first 5 minutes of every tutorial now emphasising on the fact that we have n+1 weeks = z days left to the prelims. Miserable, old sod.

I don't get why I bother to stick through with drama serials till the end, because the endings are always particularly disappointing. Just sat through a run of Goong (incredibly cute/funny Korean drama based on this comic series; modern day Korea's a constitutional monarchy in this, wtf!), and was, predictably, let down by the ending, which made me feel like I've set through a wonderful 10 course dinner, except that the smart alec chef decided to serve canned fruit cocktail for dessert, or something like that.

Am now facing perennial dilemma - To cut or not to cut (my hair)?

It's in its irksome puffy state now, but if I let it be, it has the potential to grow into something funky/something I could potentially cut into something funky by grad night. Hm. Choices, choices, choices.

In other news, have located auction of Hear the wind sing (Murakami) on ebay. Oh, the joys of a paypal account.

Must have drank enough coffee to sustain China's coffee-drinking population during the common test week. It got so bad that I got a little twitchy during the History paper. Which would account for my atrocious handwriting in the essays. Or not.
Literary:	Animorphs.	Ok, maybe this is a passe guilt thing. But I was -crazy- over the Animorphs, I'd read every new book that came out, and I still remember roleplaying the characters in Primary school. Gawd, my ugly, ugly past.
Audiovisual:	Gilmore Girls.	Guilt because watching this came at the expense of common test mugging. =x Lorelai aka Laura Graham is gorgeous. And I think I like Jess a little bit more than Dean.
Musical:	Speed.	I always feel like I've done something bad everytime Nettaiya comes on my iPod. So, 'nuff said. I really, really like hiro's solo stuff though.
Celebrity:	Scarlett Johansson.	So......perfect. Actually, I'm not sure why I'm putting her name down, 'cos one should not have to feel guilty to be infatuated with the beauty that is Scarlett. But she's the first name that came to my head, so.

ZOMG!

Was quite crazy how there were points I didn't exactly want to bounce but couldn't help doing so cause the motion of every one else bouncing just sort of shoved me in a bouncing motion.

Also, I was less than an arm's length away from Alex K, eventually got to touch his arm outside after the concert, and have an autographed ticket-holder now.

Ok, I am blogging here after neglecting this LJ for ages; on falterd's indirect prompting. I guess I got a little tired of this whole business and whomp! A few weeks whizzed by. Just like that.

Have ~~wasted~~ spent the last 2 hours (approx) watching Shakespeare in Love which has been lying in my room for ages, unwatched. I know this film's been out since forever, but, well, I haven't watched it. Boy, Gwyneth Paltrow is perfection (I'm sure CC would approve). Time well spent.

Except that I have only about too much work to complete. AHHHHFUCK!

To-do lists do Not work. And, uh.
